To Appear in International AI Search Results, You Need to Be Listed in These Directories

Trade Directories AI Search Uses to Find and Rank Suppliers

International trade directories have been around since long before the internet. Most manufacturers assume that buyers stopped using them years ago. Some have. But AI search systems still reference these directories, and that is reason enough to make sure your company is listed on them.

When an AI system generates a supplier recommendation, it looks for companies that appear consistently across multiple verified sources. Trade directories are verified sources that build credibility for your company in that search process to complement the content on your company website. The directories are not just a place where buyers find you. They are part of the evidence that AI systems use to decide whether to recommend you at all.

This article covers which platforms are worth the effort for a B2B manufacturer, what a good profile contains, and which well-known platform is better avoided.

Which International Trade Platforms Matter for B2B Manufacturers?

There are quite a few platforms to choose from, but this is my list of the ones that are helpful (If you take the time to build a good listing).

Global Sources

If you are targeting buyers from North America, Europe and Australia who are actively sourcing from Asia then Global Sources is a great platform to showcase your company on. They have a stricter vetting process than many other platforms which helps with your company’s credibility if you are listed here.

Many companies listed on the platform have profiles that are simply copied from old catalogs, with poor English and no useful information for real buyers. That is an opportunity. Take your time, build a complete profile, and add high-resolution photos of your products and production facilities. A well-built listing on Global Sources adds credibility to your company in AI search results as well as for buyers who find you directly on the platform.

Thomasnet

Thomasnet is the dominant industrial supplier directory in North America. If your target markets include the United States or Canada, particularly in sectors like aerospace components, industrial machinery, electronics manufacturing, or precision engineering, a listing here is worth your time. North American procurement teams use it as a standard sourcing tool, and it has a strong reputation with both engineers and purchasing managers.

The free listing gives you basic visibility, but a paid profile allows you to add certifications, detailed product specifications, and CAD files. That is exactly the kind of technical detail that industrial buyers in North America expect to find before they contact a supplier. You can register at thomasnet.com.

Europages

If European buyers are a priority market for you, Europages is worth adding to your listing portfolio. It is one of the largest B2B platforms focused specifically on European sourcing, with a strong presence in manufacturing, engineering, and industrial supply. The basic listing is free and the platform lets you categorise your company by product type and by the export markets you serve, which makes it easier for European procurement teams to find suppliers outside the EU.

One practical point: Europages allows you to add your company profile in multiple languages. If you have the capacity to include a French or German version of your company description, it is worth doing. Buyers in those markets often filter for suppliers who have made the effort. You can register at europages.com.

Kompass

This platform is especially useful if you are targeting EU buyers and listings start at USD40 for the first year. You have to provide company data for verification but the process is easy and the platform has high credibility so it is worth signing up for this. AI systems often use Kompass as a reference so having your company listed here can be good for your AI search visibility as well as traditional search through Google.

The company states that it covers 60 million businesses globally and has been around since long before the internet so this one is very well regarded and well worth the effort of providing all of the data and writing a good profile. You can sign up for Kompass here.

LinkedIn Company Page

Talking to manufacturers and sales teams across Asia, I often find that individual salespeople have a profile on LinkedIn but the company does not have a page. That is something that you should rectify. Many people see the platform as just a place where people go to look for work, and that can be true, but it is also an excellent and free location for B2B manufacturers to increase your brand profile and even connect with potential customers.

If your business is targeting North America or Europe then you should definitely sign up for a company page as the platform has a large audience in those areas and the fact that it is B2B focused is helpful too.

AI systems do reference LinkedIn so making sure that you are posting regularly on the site and also writing a complete company profile is worthwhile. This article covers how to set up your LinkedIn company page.

Google Business Listing

This is something that manufacturers who are focused on export markets often overlook. But your Google business listing is another key credibility feature with search engines that verifies your company is real so it is not something to be missed. This is what people will see when they search for your business name on Google or through Google Maps.

It is free and easy to set up so add your company category and description and make sure to change the photos to nice images of your products or your office. If you have not already set up the account then you will be asked to do a verification by phone to prove that you are a real company. This only takes a few minutes but will mean you are verified and this can help you with search engine surfacing.

You can list products and services within your profile and if you are creating regular blog content for your website (Which you should definitely do!) then you can also post it here to boost your profile. You can start to set up your Google Business profile here.

Alibaba

To be honest, I think Alibaba is not always the best place for manufacturers targeting serious international buyers to list their products. If you are a company making huge quantities of very cheap products, it might be suitable for you, but even then you will be listing your company alongside Chinese companies that will almost certainly beat you on price. If you manufacture high value or complex products then Alibaba is probably not the best place for you.

My personal experience with manufacturers in Taiwan has been that most of them find it very expensive to get any results from and also that it takes an awful lot of time to manage too. I have yet to meet a manufacturer who feels it is good value.

What do you need to include in your company profile?

In all of these platforms, creating a listing for your company does not guarantee that you will be listed by AI or other search systems. You need to make the effort to write a good and persuasive profile for your business if you want both human and AI systems to notice you.

You should mention your certifications within the profile text (AI systems usually ignore lists and bullet points), export markets and product categories. Make sure not to just put SKUs or model numbers on your listings which are meaningless to a buyer, they need the clear product category and description which matches what they are looking for and not your own companies special naming conventions. If you ca

n add images, make sure to include production facilities and not just product images. Many international buyers are wary of companies that do not show production as that can mean that they are a trading company, so if you are a manufacturer, show it in your profile.

If you are struggling to get the company profile written, try using this prompt in an AI system like ChatGPT to help you to write it.

Take a few hours and set this up for your company

This is something that you or a member of your team can complete in a morning and this can have real impacts on the number of inquiries that you receive so it is worth doing well. Keep the company information consistent across all of the platforms as this is another strong sign for search systems: Use the same product categories, certifications and naming to get noticed.
